Don't worry, Team Curse fans. You'll still be able to watch your League of Legends team play every LCS weekend.
In a recent announcement, Team Curse revealed that it will charge into the 2015 NA LCS season under a new name. More details will be revealed in early January 2015, but as there are a lot of questions surrounding the news, we spoke with a few members of the team to find out what this change means for them moving forward.
"I know the players haven't, and will not, have a hard time adjusting to the new brand," Team Curse owner Steven "Liquid122" Arhancet told Lolesports. Arhancet has been overseeing the team since Season 1, and has been responsible for the Curse organization's esports presence since 2011.
So why is Arhancet so confident that the move won't impact the team? "None of us will be leaving," explains Curse's support Alex "Xpecial" Chu. "We will continue to have all the coaches, analysts, and managers that have been working with us behind the scenes."
"For the fans that have been with Curse for so long, and even our new fans, that passion, the love for the team, the players, the organization, it's still there. It's the same team," Arhancet declared. "Under the new brand, we’re shooting for No. 1, no more forever fourth.”
As for Team Curse's next step, Arhancet says he's committed to delivering great experiences to Curse's fans. But there are a lot of things to consider. "There's the option to create a new brand, with a new name, logo, motto, and everything that goes along with it," Arhancet said. "Another option is to find a new title sponsor that aligns well with the team. Lastly, there's the potential for the team to identify with another reputable esports organization that shares a lot of the same values as we do. I have put so much thought, care, and consideration into the next step and I hope that all of that passion and energy for what we do continues to live on in this new look and feel."
In the meantime, Arhancet and his players want to stress to Curse fans they’re still here. "Please continue to show the team and players your support because we're not going anywhere," Arhancet says. Xpecial also asks fans stick with them through all the changes. "I hope that everyone continues to support us, no matter what banner we take up."
The move comes at a time when Arhancet must also divest his ownership stake in Curse Academy, as per the Team Ownership Restriction clause. When looking for a new owner, he told Lolesports he wanted someone who loves esports, believes in the investment into the industry, and has the time and resources to properly take care of the team. "I feel great about the selection and can’t wait for them to share it at the start of the LCS season," Arhancet said.
He's also going to be helping to make sure everything gets off on the right foot for Curse Academy. "I’ll be assisting the new owner in finding a coach, getting setup with housing, and just making sure that the players are set off well in the new ownership. I really do want the best for them and owe it to them to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible."
Arhancet expects more information will be available on the futures of Curse and Curse Academy soon. For now, you can still follow the team on Facebook and Twitter for more updates.
